No Heat? Five Checks Before You Call

Most no-heat calls in the Brainerd Lakes Area start the same way: the house is cooling off and the furnace is quiet. These five checks take a few minutes and sometimes solve the problem outright.

1. Thermostat. Make sure it is set to Heat and a few degrees above room temperature. A blank screen usually means dead batteries.
2. Power. Check the power switch on or near the furnace (it looks like a light switch) and the furnace breaker in your panel. Reset a tripped breaker once. If it trips again, leave it off and call us.
3. Air filter. A clogged filter can overheat the furnace until a safety switch shuts the burners off. Put in a clean filter and give the system a few minutes.
4. Fuel supply. In a propane home, check the tank gauge. If the tank ran empty, your propane supplier may need to check the system before the furnace is relit.
5. Ignitor. Many furnaces have a small window in the front panel. If the ignitor glows but the burners never light, or the burners light and shut off after a few seconds, the problem is inside the furnace. That is a repair call.

If you smell gas, do not touch the thermostat or any light switch. Leave the house and call your gas or propane supplier from outside.
